The UTD Bookstore commemorates Hispanic Heritage Month every year with a brand new t-shirt design. We are excited to reveal that this year’s t-shirt is designed by Marily Mata, a UT Dallas sophomore majoring in Computer Science. Her design is now available at the UTD Bookstore.

Learn more about Marily and her artistic process:

Tanya Trisna: What is your inspiration behind this design?

Marily Mata: A common feature I’ve noticed in the art of people of Hispanic heritage is the similarity in our folk art. Folk art from Hispanic cultures tends to have bold colors and geometric shapes. Aiming to create a design that implemented both the Hispanic and UTD communities, I wanted to create a version of Temoc that looked like he popped out from a Hispanic folk tale. Thus, I depicted him using the previously mentioned elements.

TT: How does your Hispanic Heritage contribute to this t-shirt design?

MM: I’m Mexican-American and grew up in a predominantly Mexican community. Mexican visual artists that take inspiration from folk art are some of the most well-known amongst our community, such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Expanding on my knowledge of art, I learned that people from different Hispanic heritages also share similarities in their folk art style, such as Chilean visual artist and singer Mon Laferte. Inspired by these talented Hispanic artists, I too began implementing elements of folk art into my own, including this shirt design.

TT: How did you create this design?

MM: I started with a sketch in my sketchbook. I followed up by scanning my sketch and putting it into Inkscape, a program for creating vector graphics, and polished the look from my sketch to create the final design.
